In case you never knew Colleen Riley...
She knew how to create champions, and did it over and over.
She commanded respect through her strength of character.
She had the gift to summon the best parts of her players to perform at ELITE levels.
She was humble and led with a powerful yet quiet, confident strength.
She loved her job and the challenge of forming teams she knew she would only have for 1-2 years. That was exciting for her because she got a new start every year.
She made hard decisions even if that meant losing a starting player to preserve the sanctity of the team.
When you played for her you knew you were part of a bigger purpose.
Her players wanted and fought to perform for her.
Her players were willing to sacrifice self for the benefit of the team.
She demonstrated the vital importance of hard work, punctuality, planning and practicing the same way you would play in a game. These were all about commitment.
She had the heart, mind and body of a next-level athlete, so she knew all about the athlete's journey.
She was proud of her teams and went out of her way to create opportunities for advancement.
She instilled in her players a championship spirit that has led many to become exemplary educators, businesswomen, doctors, lawyers, coaches and a host of successful professionals.
She helped those in need of structure and purpose and helped them find a reason to turn their lives around.
She wouldn't give up on you even if you gave up on yourself. She kept trying.
She made you want to be a better player, person and teammate.
She shared her wisdom and skills with generous abandon.
She saw in you the best parts that you may not have seen in yourself.
She believed in you.
Top Orange County athletes coming out of high school all knew of her and wanted to play for her. If you got a call from Colleen Riley you jumped at the chance to be a part of her program.
She loved adventure, the outdoors, running and making kill-shots on the racquetball court.
She sent many players into the coaching profession where they earned League Championships, State Championships and National Championships at the high school and college levels. The strategies, culture and methods she developed proved over and over to be effective.
She touched many lives, and continues to inspire others even though she is not physically with us.
She is profoundly missed by family, and friends who know how lucky they are to have had her in their lives.
On August 31, 2011, Coach Riley passed away…ending her two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.
Her legacy lives on through those who knew her…and what a privilege that was…
CR's legacy: She coached 25 years at Fullerton College, amassed 559 career wins, (559-147, the first coach in community college women's basketball to win 500 games), 15 conference championships, 4 undefeated seasons, six Southern California Championships, and a State Championship in 1978. Today's Southern California Community College Women's Basketball Coach of the Year is named in her honor.
