The Hornets wrapped up the 46th Colleen Riley Holiday Crossover on Saturday night with a 68-61 loss to Santa Barbara City College despite a strong effort.
Fullerton's home-loss puts the team at 7-6 in the standings, while the Vaqueros of Santa Barbara City move up to 11-5 overall.
It was fast-paced first quarter with both teams coming out with a ton of energy. SBCC took a narrow 11-10 edge in the opening minutes, but Fullerton quickly erased that after two consecutive jump shots by Hailey Lakey to put the Hornets up 14-11 at 3:04. By the quarter's end FC owned an 18-16 advantage.
The Hornets kept the Vaqueros at bay in the second quarter with big shots by Lakey, Erin Choi, and Kazey Cruz. Cruz finished off the half with an impressive block, steal, and finished it at the other end with two-points to give Fullerton a 35-30 lead by the break.
Fullerton's offense unraveled in the third quarter as the team went ice cold shooting only 21.4% from the floor. The Vaqueros took advantage shooting 46.2% sneaking a 49-42 lead heading into the fourth.
Fighting hard to get back in it, the Hornets managed to take a 50-49 lead on a three-pointer by Femi Nodal. The fight was on as both teams exchanged shots and leads, but Santa Barbara swung the momentum in its favor in the last four minutes with a 7-2 run that closed the door on Fullerton's hopes of a comeback.
Haliey Lakey had another big night scoring a game-high 25 points with 7 rebounds. Erin Choi followed up with 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 8 assists. Chloe Chang put up 9 points, and Femi Nodal chipped in with 6 points. Savannah Hernandez brought down 6 rebounds, had 3 assists, 2 steals, and a block.
Up Next: The Hornets (7-6 overall) head out on the road on Tuesday, December 23rd to take on No. 25 in state LA Trade Tech (10-4 overall). Tipoff is at 5:00 pm.
