No. 2 in state Fullerton welcomed No. 20 Mt. San Jacinto College to the Hornet's Nest for a big non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon and came through with flying colors landing an 89-60 victory over the Eagles.
It was the eighth straight win for the Hornets and 36th straight home-victory giving the team an overall record of 12-1. Meanwhile, the loss bumps the Eagles to 9-5 overall.
Fullerton flew out of the gate with snagging a 9-2 lead that was capped off by Donovan Pitts lob to Brayden Smith, who finished with a power-dunk. The Eagles did not flinch as they came back with a little run of their own taking an 18-17 lead off a three-pointer by Willie Miller just under the 11-minute mark. After a couple of back-and-forth exchanges, the Hornets took over in the final two minutes that began with a trey by Jaedyn Patterson and ended with a smooth layup by Pitts. When the dust settled, FC was up 43-33 by the halftime break.
In the second half, the Hornets kept the pressure on from the start with a huge 21-6 run that was highlighted by Yoda Oke's dunk in the 11th minute putting FC up 64-39. Fullerton did not let up for the rest of the game using timely shots (54$ shooting), solid defense (4 steals), and were strong underneath (44 rebounds to 26 for Mt. San Jacinto) to secure the win.
Overall, it was a great team win for the Hornets who shot 53.3% from the floor to Mt. San Jacinto's 39.6%. FC had a productive day beyond the arc hitting 11 of 25 (44%) from downtown. The Eagles were 4 for 17 (23.5%).
Yoda Oke was game scoring leader with a season-high 33 points with 5 rebounds. Brayden Smith scored 15 with 4 rebounds, while Donovan Pitts dropped in 13 points with 5 rebounds. Jaedyn Patterson delivered 10 points with 6 assists, and Trey Thompson scored 6 with 3 assists. Bishop Brooks hit the boards hard with a game-high 9 rebounds.
