FC CLASSIC DAY 1: OUT-JOUSTING THE KNIGHTS
The No. 2 in state Hornets welcomed San Diego City College to the Nest on Friday night and cut down the Knights 66-59.
The Fullerton win lifts the team to a 9-1 overall record, while the SD City loss breaks up a six-game win streak putting the Knights at 7-3 overall.
In the early game featuring Saddleback and West LA, the No. 19 Bobcats managed to sneak past the No. 8 Cougars in overtime 85-83 in what was tight game from start to finish. Mark Reichner played a key role scoring Saddleback's first six points in OT while leading the team with a game-high 26 points with 11 rebounds.
Prior to the game start, San Diego City head coach Mitch Charlens was recognized by FC Coach Perry Webster along with the Hornet Athletic Department for achieving his 400th win last month in a 67-31 victory over visiting Barstow College.
At halftime, North Orange County Community College District Vice Chancellor Fred Williams was recognized for his 31 years of vision and leadership. For over than three decades, Fred played a crucial role overseeing the district finances. His leadership and unwavering support have made a lasting impact here at Fullerton College, especially through his continued support of Athletics. FC President Dr. Cynthia Olivo was on hand to congratulate Vice Chancellor Willams with a plaque thanking him for his incredible service.
FC's Yoda Oke opened the contest with a deep three-pointer putting the Knights on notice, however they didn't flinch as the first half was a back-and-forth affair. The Hornets went into halftime down 34-33 after a tight first 20 minutes that saw neither team gain much separation. San Diego City came ready to play as the team shot an efficient 50% from the floor, but Fullerton stayed within striking distance behind steady defense and timely baskets that kept the deficit to a single possession.
Everything changed after the break as Fullerton turned up the defensive pressure forcing the Knights to only 36.4% shooting. The Hornets finished the night with a 34-29 edge on the boards while scoring 32 points in the paint using physical play and second-chance opportunities to swing momentum.
Leading the way for FC was Brayden Smith, who delivered another big night with a game-high 28 points (11-12 shooting), including a couple of monster dunks. He also brought down 7 rebounds, had 2 assists, and 2 steals. Jaqari Miles added 15 points, while Bishop Brooks contributed 8 points and 6 rebounds. Yoda Oke chipped in with 7 points along with 7 rebounds, and Jaedyn Patterson dropped in 5 points while playing solid defensively.
Up Next: No. 2 Fullerton (9-1 overall) will take on No. 8 West Los Angeles College (10-1 overall) for day two of the Fullerton College Classic this Saturday night (Dec. 13th) at 5:00 pm.
