With the win, Fullerton improves to 13-13 overall and 5-5 in OEC play. The victory marks the Hornet's third straight as they continue their late-season surge, which now includes four wins over ranked opponents. Cypress drops to 18-7 overall and 5-4 in conference action.
Fullerton came out aggressive in the opening quarter, jumping ahead 6-3 behind early buckets from Hailey Lakey and Chloe Chang. Both teams traded shots throughout the period, which ended in a 12-12 tie.
After Cypress opened the second quarter with a basket by Kaylene Vivo, the Hornet defense tightened up. Fullerton capitalized on 5 Charger turnovers converting them into 8 points to build a 33-26 lead at halftime. In the final three minutes of the half, Chang, Jaylene Perez, and Savannah Hernandez knocked down key shots to give the Hornets momentum heading into the break.
Cypress responded in the third quarter taking a brief 38-37 lead on a layup by Vivo with 5:37 remaining. Fullerton answered immediately, as Perez drained a jumper on the next possession to reclaim the lead. By the end of the quarter, the Hornets were back in control, 48-44, after Lakey connected on another clutch jumper.
Fullerton closed the door in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Chargers 21-12 to secure the 13-point victory. The Hornets forced 15 turnovers and limited Cypress to 31.8% shooting from the field, while converting at a 42.2% clip themselves.
Hailey Lakey led all scorers with 23 points adding 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 steals. Erin Choi filled the stat sheet with 16 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 steals. Chloe Chang contributed 14 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals, while Jaylene Perez added 9 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal off the bench.
