The Hornet women's water polo team turned in a dominant weekend performance sweeping all four of their matches at a pair of San Diego mini-tournaments to push their season record to 7-3.
On Friday at San Diego Miramar College, the Hornets opened with a big 22-4 win over San Diego Mesa. Fullerton wasted no time pulling ahead dropping 8 goals in the first quarter and never looked back. McKenna Dunning powered the offense with 5 goals and 3 assists, while Ava Spear led all scorers with 8 goals. Alissa Jacobs added 3 more goals and Eliana Fernandez chipped in a goal along with 4 assists. Goalie, Sienna Bertsch was solid with 12 saves.
Later in the day, the FC faced San Diego Miramar and battled it out for a 13-9 win. The Hornet's early 7-goal first quarter gave them the cushion they needed to cool the Jets. Spear netted 4 goals, Isabella Castaneda scored 2 goals, and Fernandez and Alissa Jacobs each tallied 2 goals. Bertsch was sharp in the cage again with 17 saves to secure the win.
The momentum carried into Saturday at Southwestern College's mini-tournament. In the morning match, the Hornets controlled Ventura from start to finish in a 13-3 win. Dunning poured in 5 goals. Castaneda then followed with 4 of her own, and Spear added 2 more. Shayla Summers also scored twice, while Bertsch turned away 7 shots to keep the Pirates at bay.
Fullerton capped the weekend with a shutout performance against host Southwestern blanking the Jaguars 7-0. Dunning continued her hot streak with 4 goals, Castaneda, Spear, and Allison Kaminski each added a goal and Bertsch closed the door defensively with 7 saves to earn her first shutout victory of the season.
With the consecutive four victories, the Hornets now sit at 7-3 on the season and have established themselves as one of the most balanced teams in Southern California combining high-powered scoring from Dunning and Spear with Bertsch's steady goalkeeping.
Up Next: The Hornets (7-3 overall) will open Orange Empire Conference-play at home this Wednesday, September 24th at 1:00 pm. Come out and support the Hornets for this big match!
