WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD: GILLAS SOCAL CHAMPION!

San Diego Mesa College was the host site for the SoCal Regional Championships last Saturday where freshman Myrna Gillas was tabbed the high jump champion!

As a team, the Hornets ended up taking 14th place (out of 26 teams) with 11 points. 

Myrna Gillas locked down the title with her best jump of the season of 5' 5". That mark currently has her ranked third in the state with the two other ladies in this event coming from the north and only a couple inches above her. Her 5'7" attempt was almost made but knocked the bar off with her shoulder on the way up as she jumped over the bar.

"I know I can jump that height next week, and I'm happy with my competition in this meet. It hasn't sunk in that I am the champion yet." said Myrna. Assistant Jumps Coach Laron Brown said, "Myrna competed smart and making the first attempts on each height was the plan. She has more in her and very proud of her."

Myrna also competed in the long jump and finished in 12th place. The focus was in the high jump for her with this meet. 

Fellow sophomore teammates Marianne Gourd and Yessenia Gutierrez competed in the discus.  Each came out of the meet with throwing their best. Marianne made it to the final round (receiving all six throws) and had a five-foot PR with a toss of 113' 8" finishing in 12th place. Yessenia had a throw of 103' 2" for her best of the season. 

"These ladies have competed at their best and I am very proud of each of them," replied Coach Bevec.

Up Next: The State Championships at Bakersfield College May 18-19 where Gillas will compete in the high jump.
