The Hornets battled it out in the scorching heat Friday afternoon but came up short against College of the Canyons in a 3-1 non-conference matchup at home.
The Cougars struck first in the 20th minute when Kennedy Crone broke through with an unassisted goal. Ten minutes later, the Cougars extended their lead as Crone found Bailey Williamson to make it 2-0.
Fullerton answered back in the 41st minute when Laura Velez scored off a setup from Edie Pfefferkorn that cut the deficit in half at 2-1. But just before halftime, Canyons regained momentum as Rebecca Ferguson fired in an unassisted goal in the 44th minute to push the score to 3-1.
Despite steady defensive pressure in the second half, the Hornets couldn't find another breakthrough. Goalkeeper Kimmy Sperling kept FC within striking distance with 7 saves on 10 shots faced over 85 minutes in goal. Brooklyn Martinez filled in admirably for five minutes in net.
