The No. 17 Hornets split the season series with a scrappy Riverside City squad at home Friday night dropping one to the Tigers 70-60.
Fullerton's loss puts the team at 17-6 overall with a 5-2 record in the Orange Empire Conference- still only a game back from No. 3 Orange Coast after the Pirates were stunned by the Chargers of Cypress tonight 73-69. The RCC win bumps the team up to 11-12 overall and 2-5 in the OEC. FC beat RCC on the road on January 8th 70-56.
The Hornets got it going early with a 10-4 lead that was highlighted by a layup by Erin Choi, however Riverside City ran the court turning the game around with an 11-0 run that put the Tigers up 15-10 at 2:58. By the end of the first quarter, RCC held a 17-12 lead and never let it go.
In the second half, Riverside City pushed ahead with their largest lead of the game (51-31) at 3 minutes in the third quarter. The Hornets tried to pull off a rally in the fourth with a couple of steals and three-pointers by Kaylee Shimoda and Brittlay Carillo, but it would not be enough as time ran out favoring the run-and-gun style of Riverside City.
Kaylee Shimoda led Fullerton with 14 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists. Xochitl Hood and Brittlay Carillo both put up 10 points. Hood had 13 boards and 7 assists nearly missing a triple-double night. Leilani Pongco scored 9 points with 2 rebounds, and Erin Choi had 8 points with 4 rebounds.
Up Next: No. 17 Fullerton (17-6 overall, 5-2 OEC) won't get back on the court until Friday, February 7th when the team welcomes Saddleback College to the Nest for an OEC matchup. Tipoff is at 5:00 pm.
