The Fullerton College men's soccer team opened Orange Empire Conference-play with a victory on Tuesday afternoon defeating Santa Ana College 1-0 in a gritty home performance.
The victory improves Fullerton's record to 2-4-2 overall and 1-0 in OEC play giving the Hornets a strong start in conference action, while the Santa Ana loss drops the Dons to 1-5-2 overall and 0-1 in conference.
After nearly an entire half of physical back-and-forth play, the Hornets finally broke through in the 43rd minute on freshman Jacob Leggette's first goal of the season thanks to the assist by Jack Overton. The unassisted strike gave Fullerton the momentum heading into the break and ultimately proved to be the game-winner.
The Hornet's strong defense along with the play of goalkeeper Steven Martinez carried the squad across the finish line. The sophomore keeper was sharp between the posts recording 7 saves to secure shutout win. The defense limited the Dons to 8 total shots with just 7 on target frustrating Santa Ana's attack.
Up Next: The Hornets (2-4-2 overall, 1-0 OEC) will get back on the field this Friday, October 3rd when the team travels west down the 91 Freeway to Cypress College for a big OEC rivalry match at 3:00 pm.
