Getting some work in before the Thanksgiving break, the No. 1 in state FC men's basketball team took on Santa Monica College Tuesday night at the Hornets Nest and sunk the Corsairs 91-65.
The first CCCMBCA State Coaches poll came out today tabbing the Hornets as the No. 1 team in the state. West Valley (5-0) is No.2, San Francisco (4-1) No. 3 , Ventura (6-0) No. 4, and San Bernardino Valley (4-2) No. 5.
It was the second time this season the two teams faced off with Fullerton winning the first meeting 84-69 at Santa Monica on November 6th.
The non-conference victory marks the fifth in a row for FC with a 5-0 record. The Santa Monica loss puts the team at 3-5 on the season.
The game was relatively close just under the 11-minute mark as FC had a 17-15 lead. After a fiery timeout speech by Head Coach Perry Webster, the Hornets kicked into gear ripping off a 15-5 scoring spree (32-20) by 5:33. The run began with a strong dunk by Tristan Williams and ended with an athletic tip-in by Gaven Ramirez. By halftime Fullerton owned a convincing 48-30 advantage.
Fullerton took its largest lead of the game (75-41) with 12 minutes left in regulation when Ronnie Stapp drove the length of the floor for a baseline dunk.
Armed with a healthy lead, the Hornets ran the floor and the clock taking advantage with their deep bench executing the victory.
As a team, the Hornets dominated the paint outscoring the Corsairs 44-22. They also had 37 rebounds to their opponent's 30.
Scoring its largest amount for the season, four FC players managed to score in double digits. Leading the team with 21 points was Ronnie Stapp. He 8-9 from the field and 3-4 from three-point land. Gaven Ramirez put up 15 points with 6 boards, while Javon Jones scored 13 points and brought down 6 rebounds. Chazz Hutchison dropped in 10 points and Tristan Williams had 7, including 3 blocked shots.
Up Next: The Hornets (5-0 overall) will travel down south to play at San Diego City College this Saturday, November 27th. Tip-off is at 3:00 pm. Head Coach Perry Webster will strategize against a familiar face in his mentor Andy Ground, who is in his first season as Head Coach for the Knights.
