The Hornets put on a show at home Saturday afternoon defeating Moorpark College 46-30 in an explosive offensive display in the season opener.
Prior to today's game the Moorpark and Fullerton had only met four times with Fullerton leading the series 3-1. The first time the two teams met was in 2008, which was a close 16-13 victory for then head coach Tim Bynes' Hornet squad.
The Hornets struck first on special teams when Dejon Mitchell scooped up a blocked punt and raced 55 yards for a touchdown. Although the two-point attempt failed, Fullerton set the tone early with a 6-0 lead. Moorpark answered immediately, as quarterback Aidan Karsh connected with Dameian Hernandez for an 11-yard score and later found Jude Hooks from 17 yards out to push the Raiders ahead 14-6 after the first quarter.
Fullerton quarterback Chris Lundsberg came in and found his rhythm in the second quarter, hooking up with JT Weir for two 33-yard touchdown passes, swinging momentum back to the Hornets. Despite missed conversions, Fullerton carried a slim edge into halftime.
The Hornets exploded in the third quarter behind Lundsberg's arm. He hit Luke Indorf on a 7-yard strike and later connected with Logan Lester for a 25-yard touchdown, extending the lead. Moorpark tried to keep pace with another Karsh-to-Hooks connection, but Fullerton's defense stiffened when it mattered most.
In the fourth quarter, the Hornet ground game sealed the victory. Fred Hunter broke free for a 26-yard touchdown run, and Quintyn Isabell powered in from a yard out to put the game out of reach. Moorpark added a late 58-yard touchdown pass from Dylan Hassid to Ryan Yenokian, but it wasn't enough as Fullerton secured the 46-30 win.
Chris Lundsberg was the difference-maker for the Hornets, tossing four touchdown passes to three different receivers going 11 for 20 for 153 yards. JT Weir shined with two 33-yard scores, while Fred Hunter (10 carries 98 yards) and Quintyn Isabell (11 carries for 52 yards) balanced the offense with key runs down the stretch.
Up Next: The Hornets (1-0 overall) will hit the road on Saturday, September 6th when they take on Ventura College at 6:00 pm. FC football fans hit the road for this one as it will be the Pirate's 100-year anniversary celebration game.
