Hornets Close Regular Season a Win – Earning a Ticket to Regionals
The Fullerton College baseball team closed ended the regular season in style Friday afternoon at home powering past Riverside City College 9-4.
The victory pushes the Hornets to 21-19 overall and secures their place in the upcoming 3C2A Southern California Regional Playoffs marking the fifth straight season FC has reached both the 20-win plateau and the postseason.
The Hornets wasted little time getting on the board in the second inning when Kai Hopfel delivered an RBI single to bring home Coen Goeas. After Riverside briefly tied the game in the third, the Hornets took advantage of a couple of Tiger errors to go up 2-1. Moments later, Nico Lopez came through with an RBI single to extend the lead to 3-1 and the Hornets never looked back.
The Hornets broke things open in the fourth inning with one swing of the bat by Sean Green, who launched a two-run home run over left field ivy. Green finished 3-5 with three runs scored and two RBI, nearly hitting for the cycle sans a double.
FC continued to apply pressure in the middle innings when Camran Eakin added an RBI in the fifth, and Goeas brought home another run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Lopez struck again later in the inning with his second RBI knock of the day pushing the Hornet lead to 8-3.
At the plate, the Hornets totaled 13 hits, with multiple contributions up and down the lineup. Carlos Barrios went 2-5 with an RBI, while Goeas and Lopez each drove in runs of their own.
On the mound, Sage Nelson (5-3) delivered a strong outing to earn the win going 7 innings while allowing four runs (three earned) on 8 hits. Murdoch Taylor closed the door with two scoreless innings in relief striking out 4, while making a nice grab and run to first on the final play of the game.
