The Lady Hornets broke up a five-game losing streak Friday night knocking off Irvine Valley College 58-53.
The much-needed Fullerton win completes a season-sweep of IVC giving them a 2-6 Orange Empire Conference record with an overall record of 10-15. The loss for the Lasers sets their OEC record at 2-7 with an overall record of 10-15.
In the first quarter, the Lasers jumped on top of the Hornets 19-10 to take their largest lead of the game (2:57) on a three-point shot by Elizabeth Garcia.
By the end of the first quarter, FC's Monica Hanna helped cut the lead down (19-14) on a pair of layups.
The second quarter was all Hornets as they went on a 10-6 run by 1:33 (29-22). By the time the quarter ended the FC defense held Irvine Valley to only 6 points for the quarter.
Fullerton took their largest lead of 9 points (40-31) at 2:37 in the third quarter on a mid-range jumper by Marcella Tanuvasa.
The Lasers made their move in the fourth as Garcia hit a couple of free throws getting IVC within 2 points of Fullerton (50-48) with 3:42 left in the game. That was the closest IVC would get as the Hornet's Tianna Buford, Melody Thomsen, and Tristian Johns made key shots in the final minutes to hold on for the win.
Fullerton out-shot Irvine Valley 34.8% to 28.8%. Down low, FC led the way out-rebounding their opponent 51-45.
Monica Hanna had another big night for the Hornets posting her 12th double-double of the season scoring 10 points with 20 rebounds. Tristian Johns led the team with 16 points and Tianna Buford was good for 11 points. Nancy De La Cruz dropped in 8 points with 5 assists.
Up Next: The Hornets (10-15, 2-7) will try and add another to the "W" to the win column when they play at home against Riverside City College on Friday, February 10th. Game time will be at 7:00 pm. The team's sohphomores will be honored before the game. Come on out and support the team!
